What is in a Reverse Osmosis Membrane?
A reverse osmosis membrane is the heart of the reverse osmosis system. It is the primary filtering media of the system. A reverse osmosis membrane can be made from several different materials, such as Cellulose Acetate (CA), Cellulose Tri-Acetate (CTA) or Thin Film Composite (TFC). The first two materials have become obsolete over the years, so AXEON only uses the highest quality TFC in the industry.
A membrane consists of multiple layers of materials, most commonly a thin polyamide layer that is deposited on top of a polyethersulfone or polysulphone porous layer on top of a non-woven fabric support sheet. This design allows the membrane to attain high rejection rates and allow only water to pass through.
Types of Industrial Reverse Osmosis Membranes
When selecting a reverse osmosis membrane, it is important to consider the quality of the feed water, gallons per day needed (GPD), and the desired quality of the permeate water. There are many sizes and types of membranes offered in today’s market. AXEON offers a full range of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes to suit any application. There are membranes that are specially designed for tap water, brackish water, and sea water for desalination applications. Some membranes, like AXEON’s HF5-Series, offer lower energy consumption to save money and increase the life span of the industrial reverse osmosis system. Others offer higher rejection rates or even rejection rates suitable for nanofiltration.
There are also different types of ro membrane configurations. The most common configurations are spiral wound and hollow fiber. In industrial reverse osmosis systems, it is necessary to have multiple stages of membranes connected in a series inside an ro membrane housing to be able to offer an acceptable recovery rate. The concentrate from the first ro membrane becomes the feed water for the second membrane, and so forth until the water reaches the last membrane in the sequence. The concentrate from the last ro membrane leaves the housing and the permeate water from all the membranes are collected in a permeate tube and then leaves the housing together in a common permeate stream.
